Awesome, I must be one of those stupid people because I do not play WoW constantly.
I guess that is why DOL was able to build a emu and keep it running huh?

3D Engine won't kill game play, it's graphics team which kill it.
Currently without pushing extra grass layers and eye candy, I can easily get about same or higher fps than DAoC have.
And still Crysis give me dynamic lightning and really nice water effects, which Gamebryo don't give .. at least in DAoC.
Also I like to see what Gamebryo/Emergent can do, but as they don't provide any tools to really test something without paying huge amount of money, I'll continue using Crysis as my experiment platform :)

It looks simply amazing. I am by no means an expert in the matter, but wouldn't it be possible to use the engine just to render the game while allowing all the logic to run from standard daoc, use some sort of DLL link and a modified launcher or ****** client?

I thought that client modification was illegal (Thus why that map editor thing isn't released?) so it would really have to be built from the ground up.

Technically easiest way to use different client is to make network "proxy" application which shows as multi-player server for Crysis and talks to DOL.
Though I can't comment how difficult this kind proxy is to create as I don't know anything about DOL or Crysis network protocols.

Also I don't think there is any problem to export those terrains to HL2 engine or Unreal Engine (if those can handle quite big height-maps),
Crysis is just my personal favorite as it have extreme powerful editor which likes xml imports and of course .. looks cool :)
I'm kind of waiting that Crytek releases old engine versions as open source like ID is doing, then this is totally different thing.

Imho hooking and redirecting direct3d calls - if we suppose GameBryo & CryoEngine2 are relying on directx layer - can be easy to do.

It is, and you are correct. That doesn't mean that we can't pose a hypothetical question. If someone picks it up and decides to create the layer and have a Crytek DAOC based off DOL, more power to them. Just like Metty and his mapper, we cannot stop people from using DOL as a stepping stone to something more powerful...

Its disallowed and yet..

1) Theres a mod manager in DAoC Portal?, Why have it if its not allowed.

2) Uthgard uses custom maps doesn't it? So by playing on that specific server you're using mods. (Is this map packed into daocportal or something?)

The easiest way to answer this is to expand on my previous answer.

a) mod manager: No idea about that one, cannot comment.
b) Uthgard: As I stated previously, DOL is open sourced. People can play with the source as they see fit. As long as they are not using it in a fashion that is unwarranted (Using it to hack on live for example) we will not intervene. We aren't facist dictators.

This is not about Metty's mapper. This is about what DAOC could look like using a modern engine.
