I'm starting to fear for the future of this project if something isn't done about this soon.

I'm getting quite tired of servers NOT releasing live-like features/bug fixes they have.. and most of these servers disappear after a week or two, so basically, if another Shard owner wants that feature, they have to spend MORE time creating it all over again.

Of course, some servers (very few) actually release fixes/features they have, but it's getting to the point when I'm starting to think why am I bothering releasing the fixes I have done when these greedy people don't bother releasing their fixes? what is the point? is there a point? yes. I guess these server admins think, ohohohohohoho if I don't release this super duper awesome live feature to other shards then my server will be only one with it! and then everyone will play my server because it's the only server with it! ohohohoho... genius... absolute genius.

Just look at Eden, it was up for how about 3 years, it was pretty much 100% live like in the abilities/spells/styles it had, yet they hardly released anything, and now it is gone and will probably never come back again, that work is LOST, if anyone wishes to have those features, they must recreate them, which is such a shame for the project as a whole.

Really, if a server has a feature which is live-like and they don't release it, they should be forced to release it, or they should be taken off DAoC Portal. This includes quests and items etc.

You release because you have faith in the project, not in crappy shards coming and leaving ! Thank you Geshi

Amen!
This is what I meant in my first post here!
Thank you for enlightening it!

Linux Foundation chief: 'You are an idiot' if you don't give back to open source
Taking without contributing back to the upstream project defeats the benefit of open source and sooner or later, all open source users realize this, contends Jim Zemlin

Obviously he's never been involved in a project that attracts as many talentless punks as DOL does. Imagine what DOL could be if all the competent people contributed to make it better.

I believe you need passion to contribute back cuz only passion is the power that lets you make things better. passion, it is all about passion Gentlemen.

just my 2 cents, as usual

So a server who spend much time to dev a system livelike should be forced to release it and can't offer exclusitivty because all server got this dev?

For me it's a bad idea

Are you talking data or code? The open source part of DOL is the code, database is something else entirely. If you create or fix code to make your server work in a live like fashion and don't share then you're an idiot because you're basically using what the primary DOL devs created and then enhancing it without sharing, which will destroy moral of the core devs and pretty much ensure the end of the project.

If you're creating custom features that are not live like and don't add value to the core then, again, it's an entirely different situation.

It's hard to argue this because the people that think sharing is bad are too dumb to understand why it's bad in the first place, so we go round and round.

live like features are never a server feature, as others will develop the same eventually

there are plenty of other ways to offer an unique experience

Database should count too... but I know how people feel about that so I'm not going to bother :p

If you look at what has happened to the public DB since late 2009...... you will be totally shocked...... and it's not something which looks set to improve sadly..

I'm worried that the code of DOL is going the same way..

All you people that do not care contributing back think about this.... Since a year or so i am enhancing my DB bit by bit, here a missing mob, there a spell not working, somewhere else an item that was missing etc... looking at my DB nowadays and comparing it with the beginning days, i must say it is such a huge difference. All the time i have been contributing back to storm and thus is Storms DB allmost the same like mine or mine is nearly the same like Storms. Now imagine that everyone would do that.... Regular DB releases would be the case and on top of all this the DAoC DB would be nearly complete.... Can you see the point ? But hey, it is like i said it before, it is all about passion.

just my two cents

I think I misspoke

Forcing a server to help for keep in the server list is really stupid
